Charity hospital extends its free dental care programme Specialists give up their time to help By Julia Evans PEOPLE WHO can’t afford dental surgery will now be able to access free care. The Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust is opening two new clinics for people who have been turned down by the public health system, do not have medical insurance and can’t afford to go private for their treatment. The clinics, in Bishopdale, are the first of their kind in New Zealand. Oral surgeons and dentists approached the trust with the idea for the new surgery and offered their services. Trust fundraising coordinator Rosie Graham said the trust tries to respond to the needs of the community. Patients will be able to have sedation and procedures such as extractions and wisdom teeth removals. Previously it had only been able to offer general dental

work to clients of Work and Income. Ms Graham said there is a huge need in the community for free oral surgery and extending its practice means the hospital can go beyond the general dentistry it already offers to meet that need. The volunteer work done by more than 280 dentists, anaesthetists, councillors, technicians, support staff and the hospital’s two new oral surgeons is the reason the new clinics can open, Ms Graham said. Three denture companies have also offered their services and will be making dentures for patients on site. As well as volunteers, the hospital relies on donations from the community, local businesses and its patrons. “It’s a real community of everyone helping each other out,” Ms Graham said. •Turn to page 6

A great initiative for Canterbury opens this weekend. The Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust is opening two new clinics for people who people who can’t afford dental surgery. As we reveal on page 1, the clinics will cater for people who have been turned down by the public health system, do not have medical insurance and can’t afford to go private for their treatment. And that I suspect means many, many people. Huge credit must go to the medical specialists who are giving their time to make sure people get treatment that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford. St Barnabas reopened at the weekend and on pages 4-5 today reporter Julia Evans talks to its vicar, Rev Mark Chamberlain. And in sport, Christchurch Boys’ High has done well at the Christchurch Metro Cricket annual youth awards. – Barry Clarke

News $541,588 crossing project By Julia Evans A PEDESTRIAN crossing costing more than half a million dollars will be installed on Sawyers Arms Rd. The Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board agreed to the $541,588 project at its last meeting. It will include a signalised pedestrian crossing, cycle lanes and the relocation of a bus stop between Cotswold Ave and Glasnevin Dr. While the board was reluctant to agree to the signal lights because of the additional cost they added, it found it was the only logical option to improve pedestrian safety on the road. Pupils from Casebrook Intermediate School, Cotswold School, Breens Intermediate, Emmanuel Christian School and Bishopdale School will use the crossing. Before making its decision, the board received a report by city council staff on the cost breakdown, ongoing changes to the traffic corridors and the impact of these changes on the proposed pedestrian crossing in the future. There was also extensive consultation with traffic

Although the cost had previously been an issue for residents, resident Barbara Purvis said she thought it was a good outcome overall and was very happy with the board’s consultation process. “It was very positive and informed, they were very helpful and asked good, sensible questions,” she said. However, traffic engineers said that the volume of pedestrians and vehicles using the road was too high for a zebra crossing to be considered and those numbers would only increase after road upgrades. Since the crossing was approved, city councillor Aaron

Keown said another proposed crossing 50m along the road had to be taken out of the city council’s long term plan. The other proposed crossing was for outside Cotswold School, something wanted by the school’s principal Stephen Harrison, Cr Keown said. In Brief CHURCH REPAIRED The St Albans Baptist Church will celebrate its first service in its newlyrepaired 500-seat auditorium on Sunday. The church had been holding services in the cafe lounge while the auditorium was being worked on. The auditorium has been closed since the February 22, 2011, earthquake. PEDESTRIAN ISLANDS Consultation has begun on a proposal to install two pedestrian islands on Grampian St in Casebrook near the intersection with Jocelyn St. The Casebrook community asked the city council to look at vehicles speeding in the area. The pedestrian islands would slow speeding traffic and improve safety. A report on the proposal will be presented to the Papanui-Innes and FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood community boards in the next few weeks RANGI RURU PROJECT Rangi Ruru Girls’ School students participated in a Japanese project called Picture Happiness on Earth last week. Miraikan, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo, launched the project. Science Alive! hosted the project in New Zealand and more than 100 year 10 students from Rangi Ruru took part. Students used scientific data to define their idea of happiness and how future generations can make steps to reach a global state of happiness.

Mark Chamberlain Our People St Barnabas vicar on quake repairs, Mark Chamberlain is vicar of St Barnabas, which has reopened after earthquake repairs were finished. He talks to Julia Evans Congratulations on the reopening of the church – it’s been a long road getting there. It has been. It’s been virtually six years since we’ve been out and it has been a long road. There are various reasons for that. The insurance settlement took quite a long time and the first engineering proposal wasn’t used because it wasn’t up to standard. That has worked to the church’s advantage and, in some ways, it’s been good because we don’t want a sub-par building. It also took us quite a while to raise the funds necessary. Eventually, all these different strands came together and now we’re reopening. So you’ve had some long nights fundraising? Yes we did, but we have a great team at St Barnabas. Over the last three years, we’ve raised more than $50,000 a year ourselves, which doesn’t include direct donations or philanthropic funding from businesses we’ve received. We still have two other major church buildings to strengthen

and we’re up to $1.4 million of our $1.6 million target. So with $200,000 left, the fundraising is still going on. We could’ve just left the buildings at 33 per cent of the new building standard, and that would be perfectly legal, but we wanted to future proof them so we’re getting the whole church up to 67 per cent. Does the historical significance of the church make you more concerned? Definitely. Partly, we need it now as a church and community, but we are aware it is obviously a very valuable historical church for the whole city. We’ve installed a sprinkler system to protect the church in case of fire. We’re in a good position to be safe and undamaged for many years and have made sure it’s covered for whatever comes next. What does it mean for yourself to be the vicar of such a significant church? I feel it’s a humbling position that I’m in. I’ve been given this responsibility, which I know is significant and I’m happy to take

it on. It’s such a large group of people that work alongside me and help me to achieve our goals. For me, it’s about being part of a team and although every team needs a leader, this is a very high functioning team and that makes my job so much easier. Has being vicar of St Barnabas opened some doors? I certainly knew it was a very big challenge to come to St Barnabas and be the vicar because it is a significant, large and diverse church, so there have been opportunities that have gone along with that. My wife and I were privileged enough to go to the Holy Land. That helped my work tremendously. Tell me about your trip to the Holy Land. We were sponsored by a church patron to go through the Palestinian territories – Jordan and Israel as well as Turkey – on a three-week pilgrimage. the Holy Land and marriage Our three-week journey took us to Jerusalem to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Christians believe Jesus was buried and resurrected, and, of course, the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. It sounds like a pretty significant trip. How much did it inspire you? It helped me connect personally with the culture and land where Jesus lived and grew up. Once you’ve been there and seen it for yourself, you have a much better idea of the significance of that place. It’s strengthened my faith and the way I can teach the culture to others because I’ve seen it first-hand. For example, we spent time at the Temple Mount where the Jewish temple was. There’s a Muslim mosque and another Muslim building there now, but it’s about just being where Jesus once taught. You get the feeling that you’re part of history because you were there and you’ve seen it. You say you went with your wife – how much of an influence does family have on your life too? They’re a big part of my life and work. My children are all

adults now. Three of them are married and I have a grandson and one on the way. They’re all very supportive of me and one of my sons is very involved in the church. My wife is also involved and very supportive. It’s a bit of a family affair. Was being a vicar always something you wanted to be, or did you come to it later in life? I did grow up with a Christian family and embraced the faith from a young age, but I started my career as an engineer and it was when I was 31 that I was ordained as an Anglican priest. I felt a call from God, I felt strongly that this is what I should do with my life, and I felt it was a very clear-cut decision to say yes to God, so I did. It has become a very important principle of mine, saying yes to God. An engineer! Has becoming a vicar and leaving that career been worthwhile? It’s been incredible for a whole range of reasons. Knowing you are following what God has called you to do, serving people at their point of great need and just being a leader of a community of faith is very humbling. Did an engineering

role in the community and that will continue to grow. I think we’re a diverse and strong community, so the church has a very positive future. We have a lot a church groups. We teach english to refugees, we have play groups for toddlers with music sessions, youth and young adult groups and friendship groups to support older people. We also help support youth workers at our local high school who do an incredible job helping with classroom care for vulnerable students. It’s not like we have a big strategic plan; it’s very organic. Our faith is not a static set of beliefs that we can tick off, it helps us be better people and continue to do better work in the community. Sounds like the church is going to be busy, where do you see your future role? We’ve got a big transition we’re moving through and I’m sure that more couples will come to us for marriage and more funerals will be held here, so my immediate goal is to manage the church through the transition. I’ve still got two more buildings to see repaired and that will go on for at least two more years. I hope I’ll still be around for that.

Diversity enriches city

Free dental care extended

City councillor Yani Johanson writes about the value of diversity in our society At a time when the world is coming closer together through cheaper long distance travel and greater connectivity via the internet, it feels like there is more conflict and chaos than ever before. Whether it’s the huge number of refugees fleeing war zones or the fear-based politics of Donald Trump and Brexit, it is a time of great concern for where we are heading as humans. As such, I believe we have to ask ourselves why is this happening? And, more importantly, how can we stop this from happening? Last week, in my role as city councillor, I had the privilege of being involved in two positive things to address this. First, at the city council we have signed off on a multicultural strategy, which recognises “the council has a leadership role in making Christchurch a city where

diversity is welcomed and celebrated.” This strategy has been long overdue and is a fantastic start on a journey towards being a more inclusive place. Second, I was asked to speak at the opening of the Friendship Force national conference. Friendship Force is a voluntary group with mission

values including mutual respect, cultural diversity, cultural exploration and service. Its members do this by opening their homes and hearts to host visitors from other cities and countries throughout the world. They have done an amazing job bringing people to our city even after

the devastating impact of the earthquakes. The work they do and the work the city council has done on the multicultural strategy is based on a simple premise that we all have a common bond of being human and that we all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. In my view, when people are afraid of the unknown, scared of difference or lacking understanding, I believe the world is fundamentally a worse off place to live. And yet, when we provide opportunities for dialogue and communication, for living and learning and for understanding and sharing, we are creating a better world, a better country and a better city. In essence, we are creating a community that celebrates and cherishes difference rather than being scared of it.

Since opening in 2007, the hospital has also offered free general surgery, orthopaedic care, family planning and counselling services to people who could not otherwise access them. The new clinics will be opened by Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust patron and former Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae. The opening on Saturday will be attended by Mayor Lianne Dalziel, city councillor Aaron Keown and Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board member Aaron Campbell as well as volunteer oral surgeons, dentists and support staff. It will be held between 10.15 and 11.45am, at 349-353 Harewood Rd.

Tags likened to ‘cat pee’ By Julia Evans TAGS HAVE been likened to cats marking their territory as north-west suburbs see a rise in graffiti. Of the 15 north-west suburbs, St Albans, Shirley and Papanui make up the majority of recorded graffiti incidents by city council graffiti removal contractor Intergroup. Its statistics show 47 per cent of tagging in the northwest happened in St Albans alone during April and May last year. Local businessman and Papanui-Innes Community Board member John Stringer is fed up with seeing graffiti in the area and has labelled it “cat pee.” “(These) ‘cats’ selfishly tag our community fences, bus stops, utilities, shops, churches and residential fences like tomcats marking their territory,” he said. Mr Stringer said there was one particular tagger in St Albans who had vandalised the new Rugby Park facilities, St Albans Pharmacy, Beu-

DANCING SISTERS St Albans sisters, Kate and Tessa Holmes, have received funding from the Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board. Tessa was granted $300 to go towards her participation in the New Zealand School of Dance Associates Programme in Wellington. Kate received $250 to attend the same programme. The programme is for ballet and contemporary dance students working towards a career in dance performance. ROAD UPDATE Road closures on Edgeware Rd between Lindsay St and Allard St for repairs to a wastewater main have been extended until the end of March due to difficult ground conditions on Edgeware Rd.

Talented Mairehau student ranked among the best at english

St Margaret’s string quartet in national high school orchestra FOUR ST Margaret’s College students have been accepted into the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Symphony Orchestra. Samantha McDonnell, Abida Denny, Sujean In and Amy Chung will now attend a development course at the St Margaret’s campus over six days in late April.

The girls had to submit a video audition to earn their places playing the viola, violin one, violin two and cello. The students will receive practical lessons from experienced musicians and the opportunity to play in a full symphony orchestra. There will be a public

performance on April 29 in the Charles Luney Performance Auditorium at St Margaret’s. The former National Secondary Schools’ Orchestral Course began in the 1960s and has since evolved into the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Symphony Orchestra.

MAIREHAU High School’s Jake Jeffries has made it into the top three per cent of english students from around the country following his scholarship exam. NCEA announced the exam results last week and his marks were high enough to earn him a scholarship, which includes $500. English teacher and Mairehau High assistant principal Rebecca Swanson said: “Jake possesses a sharp and inquiring mind, complemented by a fierce intelligence. “Jake’s obvious talents led to him being invited to join the english scholarship group.” Jake, 18, was also part of Mairehau High’s gifted and talented programme for four years. “He has taken full advantage of the opportunities this has afforded, attending conferences and field trips to provide further extension and aid with his studies,” Ms Swanson said. Jake has decided to take a gap year before he starts university in 2018.

Outstanding Rangi Ruru girls earn scholarships Charities receive THREE STUDENTS from Rangi Ruru Girls’ School were awarded outstanding performance scholarships from NCEA. The three recipients were year 12 students Isabella Gregory for english, Amy Huang for media studies and Winnie Zhang for statistics. Only 40 students across the country are eligible

each year for the awards. A further 22 girls from Rangi Ruru were awarded scholarships across 17 different subjects this year. Assistant principal Juliet Collins (left) said this outstanding result is wonderful news on the back of the school’s NCEA results for 2016, which show a significant increase in the number of students achieving excellence in

all NCEA levels. Across all three levels of NCEA, Rangi Ruru students achieved double the national average of excellence endorsements in decile 8-10 levels in 2016 and 99 per cent of students achieved NCEA level 1. “The increase in the number of girls moving from merit to excellence in their NCEA exams has now been strengthened by the scholarship results,” she said.

Countdown goods A train carrying more than $400,000 of Countdown products was trapped on damaged rail lines after the November 14, 2016, Kaikoura earthquake. Most non-perishables have been retrieved and were donated to the Kaikoura community. However, Countdown also donated more than 20 pallets of groceries to three Christchurch organisations – 0800 Hungry, Salvation Army and the City Mission. The goods were handed over last week. Parents in the school system Papanui Heritage Group chairman Murray Williams writes about the historical role of parents in the education of their children SINCE THE 1877 Education Act, New Zealand’s state primary schools have had a strong tradition of parental influence. Under this legislation, school committees, elected by parents, had well-defined powers which were further enhanced in 1989 when elected boards of trustees were granted even more authority in the governance of their schools. In the mid 20th century, many schools instituted parent teacher associations, groups with no statutory powers but run by parents interested in creating stronger links with their children’s teachers. In practice, the PTAs concentrated on fundraising and running discussion evenings about educational issues. In this context, it is interesting to consider the first years of the Papanui Primary School PTA nearly 70 years ago. On October 20, 1949, a meeting was called to discuss the for-

mation of the Papanui Primary PTA and a committee of 11 parents was duly elected. The headmaster, F.G Parry, was an ex-officio member (a standard practice to ensure committees did not try to interfere with matters beyond their remit) and two staff members were also appointed. The first function was held a month later. A guest speaker presented a talk on vocational guidance, a staff member, V Reid, contributed musical items and supper was provided by virtue of the time honoured tradition of ‘ladies a plate.’ By February 1950, attendance was recorded as “between 50-60” and it was resolved to raise funds for extra bike sheds and the provision of football jerseys. Meeting topics in 1950 included ‘moas’ (a talk presented by the newly-appointed director of the Canterbury Museum, Roger Duff) and a discussion about the role of speech therapists. A later meeting featured

Boys’ High dominate youth cricket awards By Gordon Findlater CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’ High School dominated the Metro Cricket annual youth awards ceremony at St Andrew’s College on Wednesday night. CBHS year 9 students Zak Foulkes, Nick Cooke, Ollie Curtis and Riley Butt all picked up individual awards. The city’s top young players were recognised for their efforts over the past year and competition-winning teams received their trophies. CBHS also represented Canterbury on the national stage, winning the recent Secondary School Boys’ First XI Cup at Lincoln University. On top of the four individual awards they also collected four team trophy’s at the ceremony. Canterbury and former New Zealand age group player Theo van Woerkom was on hand to present the awards. SPORTS Inspired: Paralympian William Stedman shares his Rio bronze medals with a young fan at Saturday’s open day.

Paralympians promote their sport at open day MIDDLE GRANGE School sprint sensation William Stedman joined several hundred people at the Paralympics New Zealand open day at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Three of Canterbury’s Paralympians attended the event, including Stedman, 17; former St Andrew’s College student and javelin thrower Caitlin Dore; and para-sailor Andrew May. “It’s pretty cool seeing all these people here wanting to get involved in para-sport,” said Stedman. “My family and I were lucky enough to be in the United Kingdom when the London 2012 Paralympics were on coincidentally. I saw all these people, with the same disability as me, running. I found it really inspiring that they were on the world stage.

“We got back to New Zealand and I joined the (Port Hills) athletics club and it started from there.” The open day was the last in a three-part series, with the first event taking place in Auckland and the second taking place in Cambridge. Disabled people of all ages were able to participate in a range of para-sports and find out how to get involved. Several organisations attended, including Blind Sport New Zealand and Snow Sports New Zealand. Interactive sessions were held in wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, para-cycling and para-table tennis. The open day is used to spot potential talent in the build up to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Hip pain: Do I have arthritis or could it be mainly my muscles?

he team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and senior clients visit complaining of pain in one or both hips. Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests that a major part of the pain could be due to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis. “Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason for the pain may be the muscles around the joint,” she explains. Alternatively, a back muscle could also be the cause, as shown in the image. Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year old client with severe arthritis who walked with a stick, told her, “I will end up in a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight through my right leg due to pain in my hip and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she was walking with her stick but without the severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was one of the factors that made her muscles spasm but the other was that older people move less and the flexed position the hip is in when we sit is particularly bad for the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that although the client was 89 and could have been “given up on” or told to live with the pain, she made a difference to her health and wellbeing. At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques (massage and triggerpoint deactivation techniques) are used to release the muscles.

The client also gets a home exercise program designed to mobilize and stretch the hip, strengthen the important core muscles and increase general strength and balance. They teach a movement sequence that stretches the hip in all directions whilst the client is able to lie safely on their bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients. In many cases having the muscles released and being taught how to maintain

it, is enough to stay on top of the problem. If severe arthritis is the underlying cause, some maintenance therapy may be necessary, but that is often more affordable and, for older patients, better tolerated than surgery.
